Rahu in Astrology: The Shadow Planet of Desire, Illusion, and Transformation
Introduction
In Vedic Astrology, Rahu is known as a Chhaya Graha (Shadow Planet). Unlike physical planets, Rahu is not a celestial body but a powerful karmic point that governs human desires, ambitions, obsessions, illusions, and sudden events. Wherever Rahu is placed in a horoscope, life tends to become unusual, unpredictable, and transformative.
Mythological Significance of Rahu
According to the Puranas, during the great churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Rahu disguised himself and secretly drank the nectar of immortality (Amrit). The Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra) noticed this and informed Lord Vishnu, who immediately cut off Rahu’s head with his divine weapon. However, because Rahu had already consumed the nectar, he became immortal. Since then, Rahu is believed to take revenge on the Sun and Moon, which manifests as solar and lunar eclipses.
